Abstrak

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death and can trigger cardiac arrest due to decreased blood circulation to the heart. Delays in providing first aid cardiac arrest are a major factor contributing to the low survival rate of Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrest (OHCA) cases; therefore, family members play an important role as first responders before medical assistance arrives. This study was conducted to determine the effect of Basic Life Support (BLS) training on first aid preparedness among family members at risk of cardiac arrest. This research used a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach. The sample comprised 31 family members at risk of cardiac arrest enrolled using purposive sampling guided by the inclusion and exclusion criteria in the working area of Mayang Community Health Center. Preparedness was measured using a Guttman scale questionnaire consisting of 20 statement items. Wilcoxon Signed Rank test used to identify differences in preparedness before and after training. The results showed that before training most respondents had moderate preparedness (41.9%), while after training preparedness improved to a good category (74.2%). The Wilcoxon Signed Rank test showed a p-value <0.001 (p<0.05). Basic Life Support (BLS) training was effective in improving first aid preparedness among family members at risk of cardiac arrest.
